What is a Car Battery?
It is just a rechargeable battery that powers anything in a vehicle that needs electricity.
Car batteries are tough, plastic boxes with lead plates inside, separated to prevent damage. They are immersed in liquids, these are known as electrolytes.
There are 2 terminals on top, positive and negative; this is what is connected to the car’s electrical system.
Stickers found on the battery will provide all necessary information, including how long it is guaranteed to last.

How does a car battery work?
A chemical reaction takes place within the battery where all of that chemical energy is transformed into electrical energy; this powers all of the vehicle’s electronics.
Cleverly, this is a 2-way system. From the battery to the car, we now know that everything electrical is powered, but when everything is switched off in the car, the reaction is reversed. This allows the alternator to recharge the battery.
The battery is responsible for many operations in a vehicle, including
Ignition The spark plugs, or heating element, get the spark needed to ignite the fuel, from the battery’s electricity supply.
Lighting All interior lights, including those on the dashboard, and exterior lights are powered by the battery. This allows you to see in the dark, and be seen, even when the engine is off.
Starting This includes air vents, power windows, electric seats, and the car radio. All get their supply from the battery.
Accessories Anything that you plugin using a 12V battery adaptor, such as phone chargers, DVD players and Sat-Navs.
All of these are capable of draining an otherwise healthy battery if left on for lengths of time without the engine running.

Battery Classifications and Types
Conventional Lead-acid batteries fall into 1 of 2 categories, deep-cycle and SLI.
Deep-cycle batteries offer less instant energy but instead provide a greater delivery over a prolonged time. They are designed to deeply discharge over and over again supplying a steady amount of current over long periods. They can supply a surge when required.
Deep-cycle battery function allows the use of electronic accessories with power off.
Starting, Lighting and Ignition batteries deliver quick and powerful bursts of energy, making them suited to engines. They supply the electric energy that powers a vehicle's starter motor, lighting, and ignition system. These are usually the type found factory-fitted to a new car.
These fall into a further 3 sub-categories.
These are Valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries which all work on the principle of internal lead plates acting as electrodes whilst being suspended in a gel or sulfuric acid dilution.
A chemical reaction takes place to make them charge a cell which becomes an electrical current.

- Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)
They are totally sealed and very resilient to vibration. As such, they won't spill and are maintenance-free.
Acid is absorbed between the plates and stopped by fine fiberglass matting.
They provide better deep-cycling performance when compared with other lead-acid batteries.
They offer a powerful start, well-suited to a Jeep Wrangler and have excellent lifelong performance.
AGM batteries last anywhere between 3 and 5 years.

- Wet Cell
A wet cell battery works in a very similar manner to the AGM style but without the need for the fiberglass mesh.
The interior lead plates attach to the terminals, anodes to the negative and cathode plates to the positive ones.
It’s the same chemical reaction between the electrolytes, lead and lead oxide that creates its power.
The wet cell battery is less likely to be damaged from over-charging and is very durable.
These batteries often cost less than other styles, often half as much.

- Gel Cell
The third in the series of VRLA batteries is the gel cell. While operating and performing in a very similar way to the previous 2, it has a few differences.
There is less sulfuric acid inside, and to get the chemical reaction, it is mixed with silica. This turns into a gel-like substance that immobilizes and prevents leakage.
It is capable of operating in extreme temperatures of -40degrees f through 140 degrees f. It is widely believed that in constant higher temperatures it will outlive other battery styles.
It can be recharged with a designated charger and is maintenance-free.
Capable of withstanding vibration, heat, and shock, the gel cell is a particularly durable battery.

As the use of all-electric cars is on the increase, so is the need for lithium-ion batteries.
They work using 5 components, cathode, anode, separator, current collectors, and electrolyte.
When charging, the cathode, (positive) sends some lithium ions to the anode, (negative) via the electrolyte.
When discharging, this operation is reversed. Repeating this operation creates the electric current needed to power the vehicle.
Lithium-ion batteries weigh little and carry much more current than conventional lead-acid batteries.
They are known to degrade slowly over time when constantly charged to 100%.
How are 12v batteries measured?
The strength and ability of the battery will always be displayed, it can sometimes be confusing.
The most common output and capacity measurement are CCA.
CCA. Cold Cranking Amps. This is achieved by measuring the number of amps the battery delivers without dropping 7.2 volts. It is tested at 0 degrees f. Over 30 seconds.
Therefore a higher CCA reading is better suited for starting applications and in colder temperatures.
CA. Cranking Amps. This is measured in much the same way but at a much higher temperature of 32 degrees f.
RC. Reserve capacity. This is measured as a unit of time. It tests how long the fully-charged battery will discharge 25 amps without dropping to below 10.5 volts. It is measured at 80 degrees f and the figure is given in minutes.
AM. Amp Hour. Found in Deep-Cycle batteries and taken throughout 20-hours.
Divide the AH by 20 to find the total amps per hour output.
Therefore, 100AH is equal to 5 amps per hour.

How to care for your car battery?
A few simple checks are all that is needed to maintain the health of the battery to enable it to have as long service-live as possible.
- Keep it clean. This prevents contaminants or rust spots from building up. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking powder to 1 pint of water and wipe it over.
- Check connections. Most battery issues stem from loose connections or dirty cables.
- Fluid Levels. Keep them topped up with distilled water only; this will prevent any harmful contaminants.
- Do not overfill. If you top up a cell battery do not be tempted to overfill. Obviously, warm water expands in heat; this could cause the electrolytes, acids, to leak out.
- Crank it over. If there is a chance your vehicle might be left stationary for any length of time, consider starting it every few days and leaving it to idle for 5-minutes. This will recharge the depleting battery and help to keep it healthy.

Can you use a stop/start battery in a normal car?
A traditional starter battery struggles to meet the demands that an automatic stop-start system would ask of it.
Stop-start technology is designed to reduce emissions and fuel consumption while the car idles.
Even with the engine off, the battery must always have enough residual power to fire up the engine when needed. Therefore, a dedicated stop-start battery is recommended.
What is 1 cycle of a car battery?
The number of complete charges and discharge cycles that a battery can compete before it drops down to less than 80% of its original capacity.
If a fully-charged battery is discharged, used, and dropped to 60% capacity and then charged back to 80% that is an incomplete cycle.
Will this battery fit in my car?
Easily our most asked question! Follow the link to where you will find a dropdown Battery Guide. Enter the make, model and year of your vehicle and you will be told if it is compatible or not.
What does the BCI number on a car battery mean?
This is the individual identification number given to each battery by the Battery Council International. It denotes the voltage and dimensions along with the polarization (whether the positive terminal is on the left or right), and where the terminals are located, (top or side).
It is basically a fingerprint to recognize the physical characteristics of each battery.
What does “battery freshness” mean?
When a car battery is constructed, it is stamped with its completion date. This is to allow the buyer to gauge exactly how long it has been stood, inactive, on the shelf.
A battery that has been left for several months will not have received any charge and will either need to be charged before use or worse, it could have begun to degrade and not be fit for use.
If the date isn't readily available on the drop-down Battery Guide, it is worth dropping the vendor a quick email.
